The AdministrationKicks Graduate Workers Out of Illini Union While Trying to Tutor Students
After offering free Tutor-In services to hundreds of undergraduate students all day at the Illini Union during Reading Day, the University administration sent 6 police officers to kick us out. Rather than making public education accessible for undergraduate students whose learning conditions depend on graduate workers getting a living wage, affordable health care and better working conditions, they decided to threaten us with trespassing. Why does the University administration invest resources in threatening us with a charge of trespassing at the place where we work and study as graduate workers?
We left the premises and sent a press release under these threats from police, but we questioned why the Administration would interfere with us, Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants, who simply wanted to show our dedication and commitment to our students and peers. After building our power with 160 graduate workers and over 100 undergrads in solidarity today, we will continue showing to the administration that the University only works because WE DO.
